Evaluation - Origins (Spots & Stripes)
Pursuing this brief was quite odd
due to the way I am used to working. Not having a final outcome or a real
starting point made sampling more difficult for me from not being able to see a
clear path throughout the rotations. This, therefore, tested my capabilities
with time management and thought process.
Much to my surprise, from coming
into the rotations as a printer, I enjoyed the weave rotation the most. A lot
of my previous work has been very repetitive which is why I think I was so
intrigued by the process on the looms. Although I would like to combine both
print and weave at some point, for now I would like to focus more on weave to
get a better body of knowledge of the craft. Another interesting factor was the
speed that I could weave at; having been told it was a slow process, I found
myself with quite a large pile of samples.
Coming into the knit rotation, I
thought I would dislike it and although it wasn’t my favourite I was much fonder
of it than I expected to be. It has the same repetitiveness to it as weave but unfortunately
I couldn’t get into hand knitting – However I found the domestic machines more
enjoyable. The issue with hand knitting was that I couldn’t get the process
down to create a clean, finished sample. I’m sure if I had spent more time on
it I would have had better outcomes.
